English Spelling Rules — Ins & Outs

Spelling হলো কোনো শব্দের অক্ষরগুলো সঠিক ক্রমে লেখার নিয়ম। চাকরির পরীক্ষায় সাধারণত Correct Spelling, Incorrect Spelling, Choose the Correctly Spelt Word, Misspelled Word ইত্যাদি প্রশ্ন আসে।

নিচে English spelling-এর গুরুত্বপূর্ণ rules, exceptions, confusing words এবং exam tricks একসঙ্গে দেওয়া হলো।

1. I Before E Rule

সাধারণ নিয়ম:

I before E, except after C

অর্থাৎ সাধারণত ie, কিন্তু c-এর পরে হলে ei।

Examples

2. Silent E Rule

শব্দের শেষে e থাকলে অনেক সময় এটি আগের vowel-এর long sound তৈরি করে।

3. Final E কখন বাদ যায়?

Suffix যোগ করার সময় অনেক ক্ষেত্রে শেষের silent e বাদ যায়।

Rule:

word ending in silent e + vowel suffix → e বাদ

Examples:

make + ing → making
write + ing → writing
come + ing → coming
use + able → usable
excite + able → excitable

4. কিন্তু Consonant Suffix-এর আগে E থাকে

যদি suffix consonant দিয়ে শুরু হয়, অনেক ক্ষেত্রে e বজায় থাকে।

care + ful → careful
hope + less → hopeless
use + less → useless
excite + ment → excitement
state + ment → statement

5. Final E রাখার বিশেষ ক্ষেত্র

-ce, -ge ইত্যাদি শব্দে pronunciation ঠিক রাখার জন্য e রাখা হতে পারে।

Examples:

notice + able → noticeable
peace + ful → peaceful
courage + ous → courageous

6. Y-এর Rule

শব্দের শেষে consonant + y থাকলে suffix যোগ করার সময় অনেক ক্ষেত্রে:

y → i

Examples:

happy → happier
happy → happiness
lazy → laziness
easy → easier
busy → business

কিন্তু vowel + y হলে y পরিবর্তন হয় না।

7. Y → I Rule-এর গুরুত্বপূর্ণ Exception

-ing যোগ করলে y সাধারণত পরিবর্তিত হয় না।

8. Plural-এর সময় Y Rule

Consonant + y:

y → ies

city → cities
baby → babies
story → stories
country → countries

Vowel + y:

শুধু s যোগ হয়।

9. Doubling the Final Consonant

এক syllable-এর শব্দে:

Consonant + vowel + consonant

থাকলে suffix যোগ করার সময় শেষ consonant অনেক ক্ষেত্রে double হয়।

10. Final Consonant কখন Double হবে না?

যদি শেষের consonant-এর আগে দুইটি vowel থাকে:

rain → raining
clean → cleaner
wait → waiting

কারণ:

rain = ai + n

তাই n double হয় না।

11. W, X, Y সাধারণত Double হয় না

শেষে w, x, y থাকলে সাধারণত double করা হয় না।

12. Two-Syllable Word-এর Doubling

শেষ syllable stressed হলে consonant double হতে পারে।

Examples:

begin → beginning
prefer → preferred
occur → occurred
admit → admitted

কিন্তু:

13. -FULL এবং -LESS

Full শব্দে দুটি l থাকে:

কিন্তু suffix -ful সাধারণত একটি l দিয়ে লেখা হয়।
